Target of Opportunity (ToO)

The SCOC has recommended that up to 3% of Rubin’s survey time be available for Target of Opportunity observations (PSTN-055).

ToO Followup Expectations

The Rubin ToO 2024 workshop provided an opportunity to more fully define the requirements for ToO observations. The report from this workshop is available now.

The Target of Opportunity Advisory Board is charged with providing feedback on ToO progress and advice on ToO triggers on various timescales. The advisory board will work with the Rubin Target of Oppportunity Observer (RTO), a role responsible for shepherding ToO observations in real-time.

The commissioning period provided some opportunities to test the ToO procedures and implementation at the summit and within the FBS operating in real-time. These included observations of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS and gravitational wave candidate S251112cm.
